Eating green vegetables is vital for brain development in children. We will help provide low income students with more vegetables to eat during lunch to help grow their minds.

Primary School Lunch Food Waste

Last week, the students were curious about how much school lunch is consumed and wasted. They thought of questions to ask students and I typed up and printed the surveys.

  1. Were you hungry during lunch? It sounds like a silly question, but some students just don't seem to be hungry during lunch time. From our results, 56% of students were hungry at the beginning of lunch. 44% were not hungry.
  2. How much of your lunch did you eat today? 41% of students ate all of their lunch, 48% of students ate half and 11% didn't eat any of their lunch.
  3. Did you eat all your vegetables? 41% of students ate all of their vegetables and 51% didn't eat all of their vegetables.

Of course there are many variables for this survey, such as age and lunch selections. However, we did notice that 48% of the students only ate half of their lunch. That is a considerable amount of food waste. Perhaps school lunches could also be provided in a smaller size (possibly at a cheaper rate) to reduce food waste.

The students had fun with this activity. We will plan more activities like this as the opportunities arise.
