Last week, the students were curious about how much school lunch is consumed and wasted. They thought of questions to ask students and I typed up and printed the surveys.
- Were you hungry during lunch? It sounds like a silly question, but some students just don't seem to be hungry during lunch time. From our results, 56% of students were hungry at the beginning of lunch. 44% were not hungry.
- How much of your lunch did you eat today? 41% of students ate all of their lunch, 48% of students ate half and 11% didn't eat any of their lunch.
- Did you eat all your vegetables? 41% of students ate all of their vegetables and 51% didn't eat all of their vegetables.
Of course there are many variables for this survey, such as age and lunch selections. However, we did notice that 48% of the students only ate half of their lunch. That is a considerable amount of food waste. Perhaps school lunches could also be provided in a smaller size (possibly at a cheaper rate) to reduce food waste.
The students had fun with this activity. We will plan more activities like this as the opportunities arise.
