Our idea!
We want to make 'plastic-bag sleeping mats' for homeless people where they put underneath their sleeping bag as a soft cushion from the floor they sleeps on. We got this idea from researching what other people to for homeless people in other countries. We felt it was a great idea and that it was something our students can do. It will take about 700 plastic bag to make a mat. We have purchased some and we want to get more from a school donation drive we plan to run after Pitching Day.
What social problems do you solve?
We want to address the homelessness issue in Hong Kong.
Our objectives!
We want to make sleeping mats out of plastic-bags and to run a donation drive in the school.
The challenge we encountered!
Teacher in charge has bought several thousand of plastic bags and the students are beginning to crochet plastic bags into sleeping bag. It was complicated to follow youtube tutorials. They will continue to try every week in our DS lesson. We hope we can make a few dozen sleeping mats to donate.
The resources we needed!
Plastic bags, many many many clean medium size plastic bags. Each sleeping mat takes 600 to 1000 plastic bags to make. Beside plastic bags, we also need used sleeping tents, body wash, clothes, etc. Several students went to a zoom meeting to meet with an organization that provided supplies to homeless people and they told us beside supplies, homeless people need our caring and respect.
Who we are!
We are a group of students (Grade 4 and 5) led by 2 teachers in charge from St. Hilary's Primary School. We come from all walks of life, from China and from Hong Kong. But one thing we have in common is that we have a roof over our head, and we have a comfortable bed to sleep on every night. The same can't be said about the people we are trying to help.
