Inspiration came from...
Debriefing with students on the following week:
"No matter how best the elderly tried to connect themselves with the community, deep down in their hearts, we sensed that they still longed for family's company and quality time spent with them."
"Some elderly could have limited social activities due to mobility problems."
"All people get older. Aging is already scary at the first place. But growing older becomes less scary if you still have someone at your side."
What social problems do we solve?
We want to connect the elderly with the younger kids by organising more activities or gatherings during festivals.
Based on research, it is found that there is a growing number of Hong Kong elderly whose children are living abroad or migrated to other countries. It is depressing to see that elderly has no choice but to celebrate festivals alone in Hong Kong. T
What is our initial solution?
The initial solution features a co-working volunteer service aimed at organizing events at elderly centers ahead of major festivals like Christmas and Lunar New Year. Students and seniors will work together in teams, creating groups for decoration, games, and performances, which will help build connections and encourage engagement between generations.
Follow-up After the Ma On Shan Elderly Visit:
We started to brainstorm any activities that we can do together with the elderly. We had each group work on 1 festival-themed game and designing souveniors.
Latest Development:
We will collaborate with Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service (基督教信義會恩耀坊) and hold a Lunar New Year Gathering with the elderly on 15 January 2025!
The resources we needed:
- refine our project ideas by leveraging our network of partners e.g. Ma On Shan Community Center
- Knowledge and more training on volunteer service with the elderly needed
