Our group targets Hong Kong teenagers because we want to tackle two issues we observed among HK, which are students' mental health and environmental awareness.
We chose senior form students in school as our target audience because several of our group members have personally experienced or witnessed the same pressures that many local teenagers face today.
Because we deeply understand how mental health can suffer when both our living environment and the planet we live on feel out of control. That’s why we want to design a solution that helps fellow students improve sleep and mental well-being at home while encouraging small, meaningful eco-friendly habits.
How do we start from 0 to 1
From our research
1. Rising mental health worries in Hong Kong primary kids - About 16% of primary school children (grades 3–6) screen positive for depressive symptoms, with anxiety rates hitting 15–17% (Frontiers in Psychiatry and Nature studies, 2025). - Heavy homework, family stress, and endless screen time make even 9- and 10-year-olds feel sad, worried. 2. Feeling small against scary world problems - Kids hear about climate disasters and trash everywhere, but with no way to help, it turns into fear or frustration.
At the same time, some of us from Grade 4 started to struggle with sleep problems caused by academic stress and late-night studying which matches up with the research.
Our current plan for the project
We plan to collect empty plastic bottles from schoolmates and up-cycling them into solar-lit dreamcatchers that glow every night. A tiny LED lights inside the hoop, powered by a back-clip solar strip. With weave bottle strips for the web, hang beads or notes saying breathe or encouraging words(maybe with small digital screen). It aims to cuts waste, teaches eco-action, and gives bedtime calm with soft light. Students will record the whole process down and upload the DIY video on Youtube.
What do we need
1) Funding: use school supplies for prototypes. 600HKD to buy LEDs and panels (RMB15 each). Crowdfund later via parent or local eco-groups for scaling.
2)Resources: Empty plastic bottles from class bins with no extra waste. Yarn, glue, beads from art cupboards. Scissors and cutters already in school. And also plastic bottle cutter.
3)Tech needed: Super-simple solar LED kits—around three-volt panels installed, about 18 HKD per set on Taobao. Install the bulb inside hoop.
