Hello everyone! We are the fabulous Year 4 students with our amazing class teacher Ms Lily and Mr Chan!
Together, we've been working on a super fun ESG adventure for serval months. We have been collecting plastic bottles and cardboard that were heading to the bin, and turning them into beautiful dream catchers.
But it's not just about recycling... we're inviting our wonderful domestic helpers to join us in a special DIY workshop where WE get to be the teachers! We'll craft together, share our biggest dreams, listen to each other's stories, and give everyone's mental health a big, sparkly boost.
How do we start from 0 to 1
Our Research background
1. Overview:
Foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong are migrant workers primarily employed for household chores, childcare, and elderly care. They must live in their employer's home under a standard two-year contract. The policy began in the 1970s to address local labor shortages.
2. Total Number of Domestic helpers in HK:
Over 360,000 as of end-2024 (down from a peak of around 399,000 in 2019).
3.Nationality/Demographics:
Approximately 55% from the Philippines, 42% from Indonesia, and 3% from other countries
4.Gender:
Predominantly female (about 98.5–99%)
5.Average Age:
Around 32 years (based on recent studies of female FDHs; most are in the 25–40 age range).
Risks Faced by the Target Audience
Overall, 17.7% of Female migrant domestic workers were reported to be suffering from anxiety and 30.8% from depression. An increase in poor employment conditions was statistically associated with an increase in both outcomes, while stress levels and job satisfaction mediated this association. (CUHK,2024)
Our Vision and GOALS
- Upcycling waste while weaving stronger community bonds.
- Inspiring each other to recycle, connect, and uplift each other.
- Usimg art to build empathy, sharing dreams, and caring for mental health.
Our current plan for the project
We plan to collect empty plastic bottles from schoolmates and up-cycling them into dreamcatchers that glow. A dreamcatcher-making workshop offers foreign domestic helpers a therapeutic way to relieve stress and express their inner dreams and feelings.
The repetitive, mindful weaving and decorating with beads and decoration promote relaxation, reducing anxiety from long hours and isolation while providing a sense of accomplishment. Students will also interview them during the workshop, which aim to understand domestic workers better and ecourange them chasing for their dreams.
