Feeling frustrated to help people who are distressed?
Ever seen your friends, colleagues, and family member experiencing some emotional distress? Do you feel overwhelmed to communicate with them, frustrated when they can't tell you what they need. Couldn't get to the point & solve the problem. Felt misunderstood?
Why do we care?
In school, we see from first hand a lot of student & parents require lot of mental support in relation to everyday stress. Often times, people around them don't know how to support each other. That makes the situation worse.
We can see the root cause as follows:
How do we start?
What happens when we are in distress?
To understand how to help a person to embody their experience. We need first look at what happened to the brain when there's a intense emotional experience.
To make it simple, the feeling brain would be "on fire" when there's a overwhelming event. This leads to our thinking brain to shut down, and we can only use our instinctual brain to response, aka the "flight or fight" response.
That is why it never works when you try to solve the problem with the person when you didn't calm their emotions first. Nor they can response clearly with logic.
How does our project fill in the gap?
To help people communicate better, we would like to design a set of cards as a starting point. It visualizes emotions & needs, which allows the user to quickly identify their emotions & needs. It foster connection, reducing the needs to guessing back & forth.
From here, we hope to sparkle a mental health change which leads farther, to create a supportive community who knows how to support one another!!!
Resources need?
- Collaboration with printers, government, and businesses for disseminating educational materials.
- Assistance in designing & testing feasibility of the card deck
- Support for conducting educational workshops
- People to spread the words
