Inspiration came from
Kids or even adults in the city are afraid of bees, but actually they are not harmful! They do no harm to us. On the other side, they play very important role in the nature to help pollination. Without them, living things on earth will have no food. Therefore, we want to help save the bees!
What social problems do you solve?
Because of urbanization, global warming and human activities, the number of bees is dropping dramatically in recent years. This phenomenon is called Colony Collapse Disorder, CCD. It will seriously affect food production and living things on earth.
How do we start from 0 to 1
Many of us got some misunderstanding with bees thinking that we can easily got stung. We start our empathy story with videos and news about bee's issue in the world. We learnt more about bee's habitat, the common species and their differences. Now we know what to do when we see bees and other insect in our daily life. We can actually live peacefully together without harming each others. We also want to tell our friends
Besides, we want to save bees by making bee hotels in the campus to provide a safe place for them to live temporarily and lay eggs. It can also be a good opportunity to let us observe their live and habitat in real life and promote bees' conservation in school.
The challenge we encountered
Making bee hotels and the maintenance need professional help from bee farmers and specialist.
We have to provide a safe living place for the bees making sure the bee hotels is put in a safe place without disturb from our school activities. As there is regular deinsectization projects, we have to find a balance and not killing our bees meanwhile.
Safety problem is also a concern. We have to make sure other students are not too scared by our bee friends.
The resources we needed
- bee farmers or specialist to teach us more knowledge on bees and how to make bee hotels and the following maintenance
- financial support $$$ to sustain our project. We don't want it to end in the year. We want the keep the project running years and years!
who are we
We are students from St. Hilary's Primary school DreamStarter Group 7 (Grade 4-5). And our teachers are Ms Sandy Zhang and Mr. Jamie.
