Inspiration came from
We got the inspiration from researching UNESCO Sustainable Developement Goals and we wanted to explore gender equality and how primary students can contribute as global citizen. Through discussions with the students and showing different videos of gender inequality practice in different parts of the world, they began to see different level of inequality towards women in their daily lifes. Through guided discussion, our group began to explore the roles of women and the preconception of woman as the primary care-taker of baby. Next, our conversation lead us to toilet signage design and why some nursing room are located in women's toilet instead of a stand-alone one. We wanted to change this stigma of woman as the 'diaper-changer' of the family and that nursing room should be retrofitted in most of the shopping malls in Hong Kong.
What social problems do we hope to address?
Our goal is to promote gender equality by elevating it to a prominent position in public consciousness and encouraging meaningful dialogue and action towards this important issue. We achieve this by creating an Instagram account that provides nursery room information in all the malls in Hong Kong. Next, we will send letters to malls who don't have a stand-alone nursing room to pursuade them to build a nursery room in both the man and woman toilet or a standalone baby room.
What the students do?
Students will collect nursing room information of all the malls in Hong Kong by online research, calling the management company and site visits to collect data and to take photos. Our secondary goal is to sent letters to these malls to request their support to rebuild their toilet and to build a stand-alone nursing room.
The challenge we encountered.
The challenge we find is collecting all the nursery room information in Hong Kong, particularly smaller and older shopping malls that doesn't have nursery information or website.
What we hope to achieve.
We don't need much resources as our goal is to create an IG to share our findings and articles. However, we hope to raise money during our Dream Starter Fair to donate to Mother's Choice, a local charity that support woman and pregnant teenagers.
Who are we ?
We are Dream Starter Group 2 from the Tai Po campus. Our groups consisted of groups of Grade 4 and 5 students. Mr. Mike and Ms. Ma are the teachers in charge of the group.
