We learned in our General Studies class that Hong Kong is dominated by mountains with few flatlands and has a large population, resulting in a high dependence on food imports. We also learned that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released the "Sustainable Development Blueprint for Fisheries and Agriculture" in 2023, aiming to increase the annual vegetable output from approximately 15,000 tons to around 60,000 tons within 15 years. Additionally, the blueprint plans to integrate urban farms into new development towns and communities over the same period, ensuring that vegetable production accounts for no less than 10% of local agricultural output. This led us to think: can we start growing fruits and vegetables right around us?

Hong Kong is highly dependent on food imports, leading to high vegetable prices. Panic buying of vegetables often occurs during extreme weather. In fact, Hong Kong's climate is suitable for growing many common vegetables, and modern soilless cultivation and urban agriculture technologies are increasingly advanced. If we can make more rational use of space at home and in schools to grow some common, easy-to-cultivate fruits and vegetables, there will be multiple benefits: first, it can reduce reliance on purchasing vegetables and save some living costs; second, we can enjoy fresher vegetables; third, it can foster a life attitude of greater respect for food and closer connection with nature.

We first got this idea from watching the news. Then, we searched online for practical experience sharing on growing vegetables at home and on rooftops, as well as information about fruits and vegetables suitable for local cultivation. After that, we sourced the necessary materials and started trying our hand at growing them. Through continuous experimentation, we can share our successful experiences with students from other classes.

We have no experience in growing fruits and vegetables and need to learn from scratch.
