Inspiration Came From
Our Green Guardians project was inspired by our desire to reduce waste at school and find creative ways to recycle. We discovered plantable paper and loved the idea of giving old paper a second life by turning it into something useful that can grow into plants. This inspired us to design our own eco-friendly bookmarks using recycled materials.

What Social Problems Do We Solve?
Our project helps address two important social and environmental problems:
- Paper Waste: Many people throw away paper every day. We want to show how paper can be reused instead of ending up in landfills.
- Lack of Awareness About Recycling: Not everyone knows creative ways to recycle. Our seed bookmarks help teach people that recycling can be fun, simple, and good for the planet.
Why Is This Solution Innovative?
Instead of just recycling paper in the usual way, we’re turning it into a new product that grows into something living. Traditional recycling takes energy and big machines, but our method uses simple classroom tools, creativity, and seeds. It’s an easy, hands-on way to help the environment.
How We Started From 0 to 1
Our journey began with a discussion in 5A about how to reduce waste at school. We researched different recycling ideas and discovered plantable paper. We tested small batches of paper pulp, mixed in seeds, and experimented with different shapes and thicknesses. Step by step, we will develop our seed bookmark idea and learn how to make it work through teamwork, research, and trial and error.

The Challenges We Encountered
At first, we struggled with balancing the paper pulp so it wasn’t too watery or too thick. Some seeds were too big, and some didn’t stick well. We also found it tricky to make bookmarks that didn’t break when drying. But these challenges made us more determined. We will keep experimenting, discussing our mistakes, and improving our design each time. These experiences will help us understand the importance of persistence and teamwork.
The Resources We Needed
To make our seed bookmarks successful, we needed:
- Recycled paper and cardboard collected from classrooms
- Seeds that grow well in Hong Kong’s climate
- Bowls, molds, towels, and water
- Help from teachers and DreamBackers to gather materials
- Advice on which seeds to use and how to make durable paper
We’re still looking for support from families and community members who can donate recycled paper, seeds, or eco-friendly craft materials.
Who We Are
We are Class 5A, a group of enthusiastic and environmentally conscious students who want to make a difference. As Green Guardians, we are committed to protecting the planet, spreading awareness about recycling, and inspiring others to join us in creating a greener future.
