The homeless struggle to have a sense of dignity on top of lacking in basic needs, however food is not their primary need but rather hygiene products, which contribute towards their sense of identity and dignity.
Inspiration came from
The students have a sympathetic connection to those who are poor and in need as they activate their empathy by recognizing their position of privilege where they may enjoy the comfort of home, warmth, food, cleanliness. Most importantly, the students feel a strong sense of empathy for the loneliness and misunderstanding of the homeless and want to allow them a restored sense of dignity.
What social problems do you solve?
Currently, although many homeless folks may be able to source their daily need for food and clothing from homeless shelters, soup kitchens and Salvation Army, data from research show that they are lacking hygiene products, especially practical for on-the-go and easy to carry portions. Additionally, the homeless may feel unseen and uncared for. We hope to extend a hand of care while showing that we see them and we see their needs.
How do we start from 0 to 1
Students are to collect new and unused travel size products from various sources, which get repurposed into care packages for the homeless. Students will create posters calling for other schoolmates to collect and donate as well to the "Share to Care Drive". Students will design and package up one pack of travel size hygiene essentials per homeless folk. With collaboration with local NGO, Impact HK, a "Kindness Walk" will be organized to involve students in a guided walk to deliver the care packages to the homeless folk.
